Vision Plus Optical Ltd., was the brain child of Derrick and Sandra Chin who were living in Calgary, Canada. Sandra Chin, an optician, and general manager of a chain of optical stores, and Derrick Chin an employee of IBM Canada, decided to set their sights on Derrick’s homeland Jamaica. They sold everything they owned and moved to Jamaica in 1991 to start Vision Plus Optical Ltd.
At that time, the majority of optical stores were located on Melmac Ave and Paisley Ave. It was suggested, that Vision Plus Optical should find a location close to that area. However, the Chins decided that an optical store should be more accessible to the customer. To this end they started looking for a more customer friendly location, and found that Sovereign Centre was opening in the Liguanea area very soon. Not long thereafter, Vision Plus Optical proudly opened in April 1992 in the new Sovereign Centre.
When Vision Plus Optical opened in the Sovereign Centre many people who were used to traveling to Miami, New York and Toronto to satisfy their optical needs soon found out that it was no longer necessary as brand name frames and specialty lenses were available right here at Vision Plus. The PLUS at Vision Plus was that, should a customer have a problem there was no need to wait till the next trip abroad to have that problem corrected. Instead they would just drive to Vision Plus Optical and get everything resolved.
Sandra Chin’s knowledge of the current trends in fashionable frames as well as her knowledge of new and improved lens types worldwide was the basis for the quality of product and service that was and still is provided at Vision Plus Optical. Vision Plus Optical obtained lenses locally (and still continues to do so) as well as ordering specialty lenses from USA and Canada. A new standard of eye care products had begun and optical stores throughout Jamaica started to change.
Derrick and Sandra worked together at Vision Plus Optical along with their staff until June of 1999 when Sandra fell ill. After a long struggle she passed away in March of 2000. With the determination of Derrick Chin and Brandie Kirkland, Vision Plus continues Sandra’s dream. They strive to maintain the quality and service that was the foundation upon which Sandra Chin built the standards of Vision Plus Optical.

Contact lenses have also come a long way over the last decade. Disposable contact lenses are now over 90% of our contact lens sales in contrast to 7 years ago when disposables only accounted for 50% of our wearers. The availability and development of the range of contact lenses have been a major factor in this increase.
